Part 8b -- First Turf and Greens, Page 2 of 2
Work on and off: Monday, June 6 thru Thursday, June 9, 2011
Sean trims turf at dock. |
Small green ready for short-blade turf. Pinkish material is decomposed granite, to give hard, smooth surface. |
Large green ready for short-blade turf. |
Sean (at right) pulls a section of turf as Nik observes small gap for butt joint to previous section of turf. |
The two of them pull the glue machine
in place to make the butt joint. Meanwhile, a huge gas-motored generator sits on our driveway supplying power (via a long, heavy cable) to heat the glue. |
A fiberglass/asphalt tape makes the joint. |
A bead of glue for the left-hand turf piece |
Nik presses the turf onto the glue as Sean continues to pour the left-side glue bead. |
Close-up of pressing turf onto the tape and glue bead. |
Then lengths of angle iron are used to pull the turf blades away from the butt joint. |
The angle iron is tipped into place and holds the turf blades with its weight. |
Sean lays down a second glue bead for the other section of turf. |
The glued-together sections of turf reach to the green and will be joined to the short-blade golf green turf. |
Sean continues to trim the turf into the shape laid out in orange spray paint by Tony. |
The joint lines will disappear when sand is poured into the turf and the blades are righted with a power broom (seen later). |
