The next afternoon, Thursday, we headed to the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley to see the displays and horse/wagon competitions in the Arena.
After a quick tour of horse-related works of art we ate a quick meal of sandwiches and beer before the show began.

This beautiful 5-month-old Clydesdale colt gets prettied up for his grand entrance as the show preamble.

He's led into the Arena to a round of applause.

He stands just below the show director's and announcer's "booth" on the far side of the Arena from our seats.

Then he gallops here and there in the arena to everyone's delight.

The show is opened formally by a 4-up horse and wagon festooned with the American and California flags.

Everyone is silent for the National Anthem.

During the preliminary remarks, Dick and Dodie Alexander's 60th Wedding Anniversary was announced.
Here they enter the stands about 15 rows below us.  Dick is a friend and fellow Volunteer at the South Yuba River State Park.

Let the first event begin!

The first event is Men's Singles, Hitch Type.

Riders cross the arena diagonally, to reverse direction around the arena.

Another contestant follows.
