Hedwig and John Lindberg, Ednar's parents, in a happy mood in their yard.
Note the clothesline poles and clotheslines in the background.

Billy Birch, son of Rachael (Ed's sister), taken at their home in Milwaukee.

Another picture of Hedwig and John, taken at same time as two pictures ago.
(Don't ask me why these picture jump all over the place.)

Larue (holding Billy), Bert in foreground, Muriel (Rachel's daughter from marriage to Ringer Ecklund),
at a park in Milwaukee. Both Billy and Muriel remained balls of fire throughout their youth.

Same group a moment later. Dot was probably taking these pictures.

Vacation at Ed's cousin Milton's cabin in Michigan, circa 1939
Larue takes target practice behind the cabin with a 22-calibur rifle.

Bert and Bob bring groceries to the cabin from store on main road about a mile away.

Ed takes target practice with his 22 rifle.

Cousin Mary Lemin, oldest daughter of Rose (Ed's sister) and Fred Lemin

Don, Bob, Bert, and Larue at the cataract (white water) circa 1938.

This picture shows the disparity in the rate of growth: Don is 15, Bob-11, Bert-7, and Larue-12. Bert is already near Bob's height (see also previous picture carrying groceries) and soon will be almost the same height, even though Bert is 4 years younger. Because they were nearly the same size people expected Bert to perform at the same level as Bob. He couldn't but was constantly scolded for not "measuring up." He had a tough young childhood. He grew to be six feet tall midway through high school, and settled at 6' 1" in adulthood. Bob eventually had a late spurt of growth to a full height in adulthood of 5' 10". Larue and Don were also tall for their ages. Larue reached 5' 4" at only 12 years. Note in this picture the difference in her height at 12 and Bob's at 11, only eighteen months younger. Larue was expected to perform as an adult from age 12 while Bob was allowed to have his childhood.

During this vacation (1937) Dorothy was increasingly ill, so our Michigan relatives came to the cabin rather than us having to go from one home to another as we'd done in the past. It also made for a more settled vacation and gave everyone a chance to enjoy the lake and rustic cabin. And it was rustic! All cooking was done on an big, old, iron cook stove, so preparing meals was a challenge and chore for Dot. Water was pumped from the well by a hand pump in the kitchen sink, and the toilet was an outhouse about 50 feet from the cabin. All the children slept in the attic of the cabin, just as in old Western movies.

Lindberg first cousins, left to right: Jack Grandchamp, Don, Mary Lemin (top of head), Larue, Lawrence Grandchamp, Bob, Dorothy, Gwen Grandcamp, Marion and John Lindberg, and Bert. Note the resemblance between Lawrence and Bob and between John and Bert. Recapitulating, the 3 Grandchamp children are Astrid's, Ed's sister. Mary Lemin is the daughter of Rose, another of Ed's sisters, and Marion & John are children of deceased Vinton, Ed's brother.

Bert, Ed, Larue and Don at the beach just yards from the cabin

This dock extended out into the beach; great for jumping from as well as docking the boat.

Back to Ishpeming visit, circa 1935
Back row: Grandpa John, Grandma Hedwig, Ed, Larue, Dot
Front row: Bob and Bert.
Look closely to see Dot holding her trusty camera, with bellows pulled out ready to go.

Back to the 1937 vacation at Milton's cabin. Standing in back: Gwen, Lawrence, Larue, John.
Seated in boat: Bob with back turned, Bert, Jack with oar, and Don partially visible.
Marion is standing in the water, and Dorothy is sitting because she was too weak to stand.

Don and a couple others in the boat

This gives a good view of the very rustic dock, with leaning planks for access.
Children left to right: Lawrence, Bob, Bert, John, someone leaning, Jack, and probably Marion.
Ed and his sister Astrid are at right looking on.

Don, Ed and Bert in the boat, and probably Bob and Larue in the water behind the boat
