Threshing day on the Joe Nicholson farm in Amboy, Illinois (Joe on far right).

The machine would go from farm to farm and all of the farmers, their families, and hired help would go with it to help with the enormous job. Once, Dot and Ed and children were visiting Dot's cousin Vina Wilkinson's farm during threshing. Larue was fascinated, and so were her brothers, with all the activity. The machine made an enormous noise. The men worked actively and hard with much  shouting and bantering. All of the women brought food and were busy all morning in the big farm kitchen and also in the summer kitchen, a building separate from the house. The separate kitchen was to keep the hot stove out of the house on hot days, as there was no such thing as air conditioning. At noon the noisy thresher was shut down, the men all went to the pump, took off their shirts, and washed their entire upper bodies. Then they put their shirts back on before everyone sat down to long, long tables laden with hearty food. At the Wilkinson's the tables were lined along the driveway under the bordering trees. It was all very exciting and fun, for the children, anyway.

A treasured Nicholson family photo at the Amboy farm, labeled 1907 by Dot's hand.
The patriarch, Dot's grandfather Nicholson, has beard, vest and tie in the back row.
Next to right, at picture center, is son Joe who later ran the farm.
The next two women are daughters, Dot's aunts, and at far right is Dot's oldest sister Margaret.
Dot, 10 years old, is seated second from left. At far right is older brother Walter.
The three other girls are cousins, whom you will see in a later picture.

This picture appears in two places as noted by the image numbers.
The second is labeled, "One on Ernest, 1906?" by Dot, so without question Ernest is at top right.
The second version is clear enough that it appears Dot is front row left.
Occasion and others are unknown.

Mother-in-law Mrs. Owens in center?
