Maps of the Great Lakes Area,
Home to the Lindberg/Slack Clan

Ishpeming => John and Hedwig Lindberg, Chicago => Edward and Elizabeth Slack (first generation)

This map is an overview of the Great Lakes area in which the Lindberg/Slack family had their roots. The towns in which the second generation lived and spread are given in more detailed maps that follow. With the ruler at the bottom of the above map you can measure that the summer vacation treks from Chicago to Ishpeming were 300 miles as the crow flies (about 400 miles by car). The additional trek west from Ishpeming to Duluth to visit Ednar's brother George was another 220 miles as the crow flies (about 300 miles by car). On another vacation with their children, Ed and Dot drove east from Ishpeming to Sault Ste. Marie (pronounced Sue Saint Marie) and then south across the Straights of Mackinac (by ferry then) from the upper peninsula to lower Michigan and then on down to Lansing to visit Ed's Sister Larue Lindberg Ralston and her family. Ed and Dot also lived in Lansing for a short time.

Ishpeming, Negaunee and Gwinn
Our memorable vacations were to the Ishpeming-Negaunee area. Dot and Ed's first home was in Gwinn.

Greater Chicago. The 3149 S. Karlov homestead was in the Cicero square. Larue and her family moved to Palatine.
Ed, Dot and Bob later also moved to Palatine. As of this writing (2003) Bob is retired in McHenry.
Dot's brother Ernest and his family lived in Downers Grove, the location of many Lindberg-Slack visits.

Many boy activities were in the Big Prairie and the local dump.
As seen in this current map, these areas are now partially developed.
Pictures of shooting Ed's 22 rifle were taken with the Drainage Canal bridge in the background.
