Larue and cousin or friend in water at Milton's cabin

Dot captured this sunset over the lake.

Here is a tale to tell about Larue. In school art class she had studied about the colors of the spectrum. Looking at the colorful sunset, knowing that voices carried well across the quiet lake, and wanting to make sure that anyone who could hear her would know how smart she was, she yelled at the top of her voice, "Look Ma, all the colors of the rectum!"  As soon as the word was out of her mouth she knew what a humiliating faux pas she had made and no explanation could make it right. Lesson well learned; don't be a show off!! That story has lived with Larue to this day, and her exclamation about colors of the rectum is part of the family vocabulary.

Note that Don now has swim trunks, while the others have the old wool bathing suits.

Eating lunch, location unsure. Might be previous year because Don has on the old-style bathing suit.

The slingshot was made by Grandpa John Lindberg. He cut the Y from a tree in his back garden, the rubbers from an old inner tube in his garage, and the pouch from the tongue of an old boot, also in the garage. He made one for each of Ed and Dot's children when they visited Ishpeming before going to Duluth. Larue's was by far the best. After the above photo was taken Larue lent the slingshot to cousin Lawrence Grandchamp. He and Bob spent the rest of the day together playing with those slingshots. They had a wonderful time with that infinite supply of rocks on the lake shore. This trip was in 1936.  Lawrence and Larue were eleven.

A year or so later Larue sent her slingshot to Lawrence to keep because it was against the law in Chicago to use it. Later, in 1943 when Lawrence was in the Navy and stationed at Navy Pier in Chicago, he told Larue she had made a friend for life when she sent the sling shot to him. She had forgotten about it. He still had it.

Everyone in the 3149 Lindberg family enjoyed the visits by Lawrence because he was such a wonderful person. He loved peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and Larue was always sure to make one for him. Bert would count the hours he was there, just as one counts the days of a vacation hoping it would never end. On one visit, as soon as Lawrence came through the front door Bert asked him, "When are you going to go?" so he would know how long he could count on Lawrence being there. Lawrence was aghast, thinking Bert wanted him to go! Bert was never sure he convinced Lawrence it was just the opposite.

Don, Bob and Bert did no such thing as worry about Chicago law with their slingshots. They used theirs in the Big Prairie two blocks west of 3149 S. Karlov, and in the dump, which was a few more blocks west. Rats were the best targets, but there is no recollection of anyone hitting one. They used Grandpa's slingshots as models for many more they made themselves. Link to map.
