Bert shooting Ed's 22-calibur rifle at the Chicago Drainage Canal

This location was a few blocks east and several blocks south of the Lindberg home at 3149 S. Karlov (link to map). The canal was essentially an open sewer, as its odor made clear. All forms of matter could be seen flowing by. The bridge is part of Crawford Avenue, which later became Pulaski, I presume because of the heavy Polish population in the neighborhood. This has now been cleaned up and the bridge replaced by a modern structure. In this and the picture below the family has on Easter Sunday clothing. Don't ask why we celebrated by shooting at an open sewer.

Don, Bert, Ed at the canal

Larue was there at the canal, so it was a special day.

Family gathering at the Earnest Slack home on Whiffen Place in Downers Grove.

Below her, left to right, are Edna, Mac McKee, his baby Dennis held by mother Beatrice.
In front of Beatrice is Ernest and then Don, also standing.
Next row down: Larue, Vera Jean Slack (Ernest's daughter) and Bert.
Bottom row: Charlotte (Ern and Edna's other daughter, called Chatty), Teddy McKee

Same group, different pose.

Ed in Model A Ford, Bob and Don in background, Bert at center.
Note the accordion luggage rack on the wide running board.

1_46_05.jpg

Betty Jane Purcell and Larue with dog Jackie licking his lips.
They are about 16 years old, wearing outfits purchased with money they earned themselves. Big stuff!

At about this age Larue and Dot made an interesting discovery in the hall cabinet used to store dishes, table cloths and so on. Larue wrote an interesting story about the discovery as one of her articles in her regular column "From the Front Porch" in the Guadalupe newspaper.

Bert and Bob at Drainage Canal (goes with top pictures on this page).
Note the '38 vintage car on bridge far in the background. It looks like a toy.

Don in blue and gold uniform of Farragut High School Band.
Don was about 18 and photo taken between 3149 and Mackall's on left.

1_47_03.jpg

Same pose, with 3149 bay-window-type push-out in background.
The Farragut band always won or placed high in Chicago band competitions.
Their football team was generally last. The year Bert was reporting for the
Chicago Tribune (unpaid student volunteer) they scored only one touchdown all season!

Larue and Betty Jane in their outfits. Larue wore hers to the 1937 vacation at Milton's cabin.

1_47_04.jpg

Visit near Christmas from Louise Gibeaud (left, fur collar) and her two children in front of her:
Jerry and Nancy (now Nancy Vine).
Larue Ralston in center. Larue and Louise are Ed's two youngest sisters.
Don is between Ed's sisters, then Larue Jr. (with permanent) and Dot.  Bert and Bob right front.
Picture was taken on sidewalk in front of 3149, with Mackall front porch in background.

1_47_05.jpg

Same group, with Dot and Ed exchanging as photographers.

Visitors load into car to leave.

1_48_02.jpg

Lindbergs in Ishpeming, year and occasion unknown.
L to R back row: John, his daughters Rose, Louise, Rachael, Larue; son Ednar.
Boy in front is Jerry Gibaud, sister Nancy Gibaud next to him. Boy yawning is probably Ronald Ralston.

Wonderful picture of unknown woman at unknown place, circa 1935

Clockwise around table: two children of Louise (Jerry and Nancy), Louise, May (standing),
Rachael w/ glasses, Rose, Larue, George, Ed standing, Hedwig, Astrid standing, John.
Occasion probably 50th wedding anniversary with their seven living children (May is widow of son Vinton)
Larue Jr. mentions that Vinton died of asthma -- perhaps from working in the iron mine?
