Dot's father Edward worked as a bricklayer when the Eli Whitney school was Built. His two youngest graduated there. Anne, a year older than Dot, was in the first class to graduate. Her class picked the school colors, purple and gold. Dot graduated the following year. Dot married Ed in 1919 and in 1932 Dot and Ed moved back to her home at 3149 S. Karlov, about a half mile from Eli Whitney on 28th and Komenski. Link to map. All four of their schooled children graduated from Whitney. Young Dorothy Rosalie never attended public school. Larue moved back to 3149 with her family for a few years during the post-WWII housing crunch, and both of her children attended Whitney.

Dot and Ed sold the home to their oldest son Don after Larue and Family and Dot and Ed moved to their new homes in Palatine. Don, his wife Lois, and their five children stayed in the house long enough that all of their five children attended Whitney. None of Larue's or Don's children graduated from Whitney. The 3149 house was occupied continuously by the Edward A. Slack and Elizabeth Nickolson Slack family and descendants from 1895 until about 1965.

Don and Bert with boat on lake at Milton's cabin

Bert was in love with the boat, especially now that it had an engine this year (1937, Bert was 7 years old). He learned to handle it so well that he was allowed to take the boat out alone as long as he stayed close to the shore, even though he didn't know how to swim. One day when he was at the opposite side of the lake a sudden wind and rain storm blew up. The family could hear the waves slapping against the boat all the way across the lake and there was no other boat to take to rescue him. A scary time but Bert managed it very well and came home safely to a frightened family.

On another day when Grandpa John was visiting, several grandchildren and Grandpa got in the boat and Bert immediately sat in the back in the pilot's position ready to start the engine. Grandpa was startled and said someone older should be the pilot. Everyone assured him that Bert had been running the boat all over the lake and was expert in starting the engine, piloting, docking, and shutting down. After a brief moment of disappointment with Grandpa's lake of faith and that he wouldn't be pilot, Grandpa conceded and Bert was the pilot.

Larue and Buddy Tousignant in canoe at Milton's cabin

After that summer Milton sold the cabin, so the family never was able to go back. Those summers at Milton's were the best of all that the children of Dot and Ed could remember. World War II hit the U.S. about 3 years later. Don, Bob, and Buddy were all in the service. Don was in the Army motor pool servicing trucks and jeeps in Germany. Bob joined the Air Force Officer's Training School but was so young that the war ended before he finished training so he didn't go overseas. Buddy went overseas and came back home safely. He was one of about 10 children. All the boys of his family were in the service. Twin brothers Larue's age, younger than Buddy by about 2 years went but one was killed. All the other brothers came home.
