A Hero's Welcome for CPL Brandon Walden

Wounded soldier CPL Brandon Walden is given a hero’s welcome by Nevada County in his home town of Penn Valley, California.  CPL Walden was serving in Afghanistan on July 3, 2012 when a terrorist disguised in an Afghan National Security Forces uniform shot him and four other squad members at close range with an automatic weapon, severely wounding them with multiple hits to each.  Since then CPL Walden has been recuperating at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where his mother Laura Cummins and Fiancée Raina Sedano have been with him.  After a short Thanksgiving visit they returned to Texas for continued rehabilitation.

The photographs here were taken by our daughter Barbara Heninger and permission given to edit and compile them into this show.  Lou Cappello of Penn Valley assisted in arrangements for the parade and celebration, and a video by Paul Towne. The link for Paul's video is also given below.  Many others contributed to the celebration as acknowledged in the show, especially organizer and Master of Ceremonies Jay Cooper.

Nevada City Mardi Gras Parade
Sunday, February 19, 2012
Posted February 23, 2012

Mardi Gras on Broad Street is the most popular parade in Nevada City and, being in February, often falls on a rainy day.  Not this year -- it was sunny and beautiful with just enough coolness to keep people moving and happy.

BBC World Shoot
Posted January 12, 2012

The original version of this show in smaller size is at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-12618167

I chose to reproduce the slideshow here because the pictures are too beautiful to be limited to the small window in the original at the above link. It was a tedious process because I had to copy each photo individually as the slideshow played and then integrate them with the narration via ProShow Producer. I copied the narration while the original show was playing via this feature in Adobe Flash Player.  I had to adjust the duration each photo played to match the narration, which turned out to be quite fast with Producer.  I was familiar with the process from having just completed a narration of my own (see Save Our Park video below).

The photos are by well-known photographer Timothy Allen.  On his web page about this photo shoot he wrote some hints for us amateur photographers which are well worth reading.  http://humanplanet.com/timothyallen/  Following them is another matter -- I generally don't have that much time when out on one of my photo shoots. Thank goodness there are photographers like Timothy Allen who do take the time and get these beautiful results.

Save Our Park
South Yuba River State Park
Posted January 8, 2012

This show describes facilities and activities at the park, many of which would be lost if the park were closed even temporarily. State legislators are considering such a move to save a few dollars. This show is a must-view for such decision makers.  Also, it is a good place for new visitors to become familiar with the park's most important features.

Access to two versions of this show are given below, a high-definition version for those who use Windows PCs and have a high-speed Internet connection, and lower definition versions for a broader range of viewers, including those who use Macintosh computers, iPads, and iPods. This is done with a Youtube posting and allows users to select among 240p, 360p, 480p, and 720p resolutions (click on the default "360p" resolution in the control bar).

Visits in 2003, 2007-2010

For many years we have visited Mary's family in Bellingham, WA, in early August. On five of these visits we drove up to the U.S./ Canada border to see Peace Arch Park, a beautiful place with floral displays and statue art which change each year. These video slides shows give a glimpse of this beauty.

Froeberg-Ford Christmas Party
December 4, 2010

Old friends renewed their links, sons and daughters continued the Lachine Drive tradition, and grandsons and granddaughters brought new wonder to everyone. Ruth Froeberg, daughter Paula Froeberg Ford, and Hank Ford again opened their home to long-time and newer residents in the Lachine Drive neighborhood.  Everyone brought food, wine and wonderful Christmas sweets to fill the tables.  But why use more words when the video slide show below tells the story much better.

Three versions are given from left to right -- the highest definition for those with fast Internet connections, high definition for those with medium-speed connections, and medium definition for those who must use YouTube to view Internet movies (e.g. Macintosh users). View the YouTube shows at 720p in full screen for best results, or 480p if your download balks for the higher definition. YouTube opens in 320p so you must click on the size button at the bottom of the viewing box to select 720p or 480p.

July 10th, 2010 Weekend at Lake Wildwood

Courtney and Dave visited again on July 10 and 11 to go wakeboarding and tubing. On this visit Courtney was accompanied by Elizabeth, who was game for both sports. The wakeboarding and first tubing slide shows are in high definition (1800 x 1200 pixels as in the July 4th shows below). The tubing show also was made at 1024 x 683 pixels (lower def) for those with medium-speed Internet connections. If your connection speed can handle it, the HD version is much better for large screens.

July 4th, 2010 Week at Lake Wildwood

These two shows are in high definition at large size (1800 pixels wide with a 1.5 aspect ratio) so they may take several seconds to download enough to begin the streaming video shows. I don't recommend viewing if you don't have a high-speed Internet connection.  Please switch to full screen viewing to take advantage of these larger files. Your browser will adjust to your computer's screen size, but always at a 1.5 aspect ratio, typical of most computers these days.

Mary's Birthday Video Shows

Mary Pagels-Lindberg celebrated her 80th birthday with many friends and relatives at the Lindberg home on her birthday, Sunday, February 28, 2010. During the party we showed a 16-minute series of high-definition slide shows of her life, from her early years growing up in Santa Barbara, California through her recent years with family and friends in Lake Wildwood. Two other shows had been made (Brothers and Sisters, and Travels by Car) but weren't shown to keep the presentation short and snappy. The complete series is given below, in good but not high definition, in deference to those with modest Internet speeds. Nevertheless, you should view them at full screen even though they may not be as sharp as your computer's ultimate capability. Two further shows about her travels by air will be added to these in the future.

Anthony House Under Lake Wildwood

Anthony House was a stagecoach stop on the way from Marysville to the covered bridge at Bridgeport and then on to Virginia City. It stood on old Pleasant Valley Road before a dam was built and this part of the valley filled to form Lake Wildwood. Its exact location was a mystery (Pleasant Valley Road was moved to cross Deer Creek at the dam) until recently. The location is confirmed by an old photo in possession of the great, great grandson of the owners, Frank and Grace Davey. This video slideshow was made from two photos, the one from Mike Davey and another taken on September 13, 2009 from the top of the stairs to the children's swim area near the pavilion in Commodore Park. You will see that the hills in the background of both photos match almost exactly as one photo dissolves into the other and back again. Camera location of the modern photo is farther from Anthony House than for the old photo because the shoreline is the best available location not under water.

Anthony House was built in 1849 on the north side of Deer Creek. It had 6 rooms upstairs, a restaurant downstairs, and served as a hotel, post office, livery stable and stage stop. The property was up for sale in 1852. Subsequent owners included William Henry Davey, Nevada County Supervisor 1908-1916, and later his son, Frank Davey. The original home burned down in 1876 but was quickly rebuilt. Post office and stage stop operations continued to 1906 when the post office was moved to Smartsville, just up the road in Yuba County. Thereafter, declining traffic on the Marysville-Virginia City trade route led to farming and cattle raising as the main use of the property. By 1970 when Boise-Cascade began development of this area, the property had fallen into disrepair and the house was burned down as a training exercise by the Penn Valley Fire Department. Construction of Anthony Dam here on Deer Creek submerged any remains of this historic site under Lake Wildwood.  Photograph of Anthony House and Ranch, Courtesy of the Davey Family. Mary and I visited Peggy and Ken at their home in Sequim, WA, on August 8,9, 2009. I took only a few still photos on this visit, so the video linked below touches on only a few things we did during a whirlwind two days. The music is in honor of Ken (a.k.a. Sparky) and his recently-formed motorcycle group "Veterans of Foreign Wars" living in the Sequim area.

Deer Creek Inn in Nevada City presents eight Winemaker Suppers each year. This is the first supper presented in their garden beside the inn and along Deer Creek. The link on the left below is to a moderately high definition video slide show of the event. The link on the right is to an ad hoc movie, at lower resolution to be suitable for only moderately fast Internet connections. It is an embedded youtube video. The ad hoc movie will run on many computer operating systems and devices, but the high definition slide show runs only on Windows PCs.

As always, the 2009 Penn Valley Rodeo Parade features many past, present, and future rodeo queens, plus creative floats by Little League, Cub Scouts, the 4H club, local businesses in downtown Penn Valley and surrounding area, Nevada County District 4 Supervisor Hank Weston and his lovely wife, Parade Grand Marshalls Louie and Joyce Osterude, the Wildwood Barbershop Quartet, the Wells Fargo stage, fire trucks, Model A Fords, and several tractors in action.  New this year is an entry from the South Yuba River State Park, with smiling park volunteers, flora, fauna and river art on board. Also new is a striking Viking ship complete with real Norway Vikings.

Another Weekend on the Mendocino Coast

On May 11-13, 2009 Mary and I stayed with Val and Sandy Watson at Agate Cove Inn for a reprise of a similar visit in 2006 (scroll down to see four video shows of this former visit). The shows here may be of interest to those wanting more intimate details of Agate Cove Inn, nearby MacKerricher Park and Mendocino Botanical Gardens, and the beautiful shoreline at the gardens. The scenery and music are beautiful in all four shows, so they are fun to watch just for general enjoyment.

New to this website: I'm now posting YouTube versions of my Photodex shows for those not using Windows PCs, for example Macintosh computers. The Photodex Presenter versions have much higher resolution then YouTube versions for the same Internet connection speed and so are preferred for those using PCs. Those with Macintosh and other operating systems should click on the links labeled YouTube in the table below.  If at all possible, view the shows at 720p resolution and click on the little square in the lower right corner of the YouTube viewing box to see the show in full screen.

The 13 minute 40 second show below takes you on a hole-by-hole tour of Lake Wildwood's golf course in Penn Valley, California.  The tour includes many pictures worthy of viewing just to see the beauty of the course.

Mary and I decided to celebrate our 52nd Wedding anniversary with an extended European tour via the Tauck River Tour from Budapest to Amsterdam.  The most memorable part of the tour for me (Herb) was a 30-km bike ride from Durnstein to Melk in Austria.  I've decided to make the photos I took on this ride into a prelude for the entire cruise.   I plan to finish web pages and web-running videos for the entire trip in pieces as time is available.  But for now, enjoy the video prelude...

P.S.  Jerry Medlin, the guy in black in the thumbnail above, asked me to post the download-and-play version, too.  Here it is Jerry: Right click to download.

This year's Living History Day was on April 27, 2008 and was combined with an Art Show & Sale with booths in the corral area behind (toward the river) the Historic Barn.  Because this combined event was new to the community, we created a video slide show to illustrate what to expect.  About half the artists were able to contribute example works to include in the slide show.  The event included these works plus many more, from these artists and the others, totaling more than 50 artists and hundreds of beautiful works to enjoy and purchase.

Each March three volunteer cross-training classes are held at Empire Mine State Historic Park (in 2008, March 12, 13, 14  from 8:45 AM to Noon) followed by three classes specific to the South Yuba River State Park (March 15, 19, April 5  from 9:00 AM to Noon). This video shows activities volunteers perform at SYRSP, to help potential volunteers decide if they would be interested and what activities interest them most.  If you are encouraged to join us, please call the Visitor Center at 530-432-2546 to reserve a place in the next March classes, and drop into the Visitor Center to learn how you can help in the meantime.

After three years of work by park docents, volunteers and California State Park employees, the Historic Barn is opened as an interpretive exhibit of transportation through Bridgeport, and the public display of historic wagons, a hay press and hay fork.  The interpretive center theme is: "Bridgeport, a vital transportation link on the shortest historic trans-Sierran wagon route."  It was made possible by private donations of these items over several decades to the California State Parks Archeology, History and Museums Division, Museum Initiative Unit, and by financial grants and private contributions.

Tours and Golf in Acapulco

Each Spring, Jim Knight, head golf pro at the Lake Wildwood Golf Course, arranges for a week of touring and golf in a tropical resort with excellent golfing facilities.  This year a group went to the El Marques Resort in Acapulco, Mexico, from February 5 to 12, 2007.  Four videos recall a brief story of the fun and sights in Acapulco.  The first sets the location of Acapulco in Mexico and the resorts in Acapulco, and shows Lake Wildwood members enjoying social and golf activities.  The next three are highlights of tours we took in and around Acapulco, of interest to a more general audience from start to finish.

Lake Wildwood Boat Parades

The Lake Wildwood community celebrates July 4th from morning until night, when a spectacular fireworks display fills the sky above the lake and reverberates from hill to hill around the lake.  Another major event is the boat parade, sponsored by Lake Wildwood Association and the Lake Wildwood Yacht Club.  Many boat owners spend weeks designing and building imaginative boat decorations which celebrate the birth of our nation.  The two shows below are dedicated to their hard work, and to the American spirit.

During a visit to the Baldasti family in the summer of 2006, they took us to this museum to view classic cars dating from 1904 to the mid 1930's, along with a few from the 40's. The slide shows below give a glimpse of some of these cars.

Nevada County Activities

Many of the video slide shows on this page and the download-and-run-separately page are annual activities put on by various organizations in Nevada County. These are of interest to those of us living in or visiting the county, and of special interest to those thinking about moving to the county.  Nine such shows are given in the table below, and more will be created as time permits. The shows have been entered into the table in the order they occur throughout the year.  The month of each show is given, along with run time and file size, above each thumbnail hot link. These will help you be on the alert for event announcements in The Union and The Penn Valley Courier.

Malakoff Diggins Humbug Day

The second Saturday of June each Spring, the rangers and docents of Malakoff Diggins State Park create a day of fun and history at the park.  There is so much to see, hear, and do on these days that you have to go to several in order get a reasonably complete experience of the event.  I therefore waited until I had Humbug Day pictures from two years before creating slide show videos.  In 2006 I concentrated on tours of the buildings and in 2007 I focused on outdoor activities and crafts.  Both years I took in the flavor of the music, parade, food, and celebration atmosphere.  If you haven't gone to at least one Humbug Day I hope the shows encourage you to do so, and if you have gone I hope the shows bring back memories of the good times you've had.  For more pictures and interesting facts about Malakoff Diggins State Park see Keith Henderson's Malakoff Page

Weekend on Mendocino Coast

In April, 2006, Mary and I and another couple spent a three-day weekend in Mendocino, CA.  We are all best of  friends from our tennis years in Santa Clara.  The video shows in the table below have some pictures of most interest to the four of us, but most are scenic and town pictures of more general interest, especially the show Short Hikes in Mendocino Area.  We stayed at Agate Cove Inn, a delightful place right on the ocean just north of downtown Mendocino.  This show gives an intimate look at the inn and surrounding area.  Restaurants and Shopping follows our walks in Mendocino and Fort Bragg.  The short Reprise highlights the entire weekend, and traces our wanderings with two highway maps and a Mendocino city map used to link locations to the photo record.

Nevada City Bicycle Classic

The Nevada City Bicycle Classic is held every year on Father's Day weekend, with the main races held in downtown Nevada City on Sunday.  The two shows below give the flavor of these exciting races.  The first is a general description of the environment and all the races, and highlights of the women's and men's pro events.  The second focuses on participation of the local Sierra Express Racing Team in the Masters 35+ / 45+ event.

This video is simply an attempt at art with photos from Africa.
